My car broke down. I called a friend and he towed me in. Arriving at the dealership, they advised that they need to also assess my gears as towing could have damaged my vehicle. Are they trying to make a quick buck, or is there truth in their story?

Never ever tow electric cars. They do not have the same neutral gears as traditional engine cars and it can get damaged. Rather let them assess to ensure there is no damage. Your insurance should cover the costs of a flatbed truck or trailer.
